Question:

What is the relationship between the OneNote client and the OneDrive client on a Windows PC?
It doesn't feel like there's anything to do with each other.
 

Answer:

On Windows PCs, the OneNote client and the OneDrive client have nothing to do with each other.
The OneDrive client also can't manage OneNote files:

• You can't see the real OneNote notebook files. You can only see placeholder .url files for OneNote notebooks. It's just used to indicate that there's a OneNote notebook in that location. There is no other use.
• OneNote notebooks cannot be deleted.
• You don't see any information about the OneNote notebook: size.

 
Completely uninstall the OneDrive client without any effect on OneNote syncing.
 
The OneNote client has its own set of syncing methods that are separate from the OneDrive client:

• OneDrive client synchronization minimum units can only be down to the file level. As section level relative to OneNote.
• The smallest unit of OneNote client synchronization can reach the paragraph level of the body, which is finer than that of the OneDrive client.
